# Getting Started with Codex — practice workbook

LearnWithZavi · 30 October 2026

Course: https://www.learnwithzavi.com/course/getting-started-with-codex
Starter ZIP: https://www.learnwithzavi.com/resources/codex-starter-project.zip

This is an independent course, not an OpenAI certification. All event details are fictional. The course is free to read; using Codex requires your own eligible access. No company data, API key or paid external service is needed for the practice page.

## 1. Starting point

- Codex surface and account/workspace used:
- Extracted practice folder:
- Unchanged starter ZIP or baseline location:
- Six files found: index.html, styles.css, script.js, SOURCE.md, README.md, AGENTS.md.
- Active permission mode:
- Current headline and observed intentional bug:

Open the local practice folder, not a company-data folder. Ask Codex to inspect the files and instructions before editing. Follow the current official setup guide: https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/quickstart

## 2. Task brief template

- Goal and intended user:
- Exact source files and facts:
- Requested change:
- Things to preserve:
- Allowed files, actions and destinations:
- Dependencies or services that are outside scope:
- Observable acceptance checks:
- Expected handoff and limitations to report:

## 3. First edit: answer key

Replace the h1 with **AI at Work: A Practical Starter Session**.

Replace the introduction with **Practise clear instructions and checking AI drafts in a friendly online workshop.**

Keep 12 November 2026, 14:00–15:00 UTC, online delivery, free cost, the session link, more-details button and fictional-learning notice. No sponsor, qualification, real registration or external service should be invented. The small wording change belongs in index.html.

## 4. Bug report template

- Page/version being tested:
- Steps to reproduce:
- Expected behaviour:
- Actual behaviour:
- Relevant screenshot or error (without secrets):
- Scope of requested fix:
- Checks to repeat:

### Intentional toggle bug and expected fix

The starter always opens the panel. Its handler needs to read and invert the current state rather than setting it to open on every click. The text, visible panel and aria-expanded state must agree.

| Step | Panel | Button text | aria-expanded | Your result: pass / fail / not run |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fresh page | Hidden | Show more details | false | |
| First activation | Visible | Hide more details | true | |
| Second activation | Hidden | Show more details | false | |
| Third activation | Visible | Hide more details | true | |

- Pointer result:
- Tab then Enter result:
- Tab then Space result:
- Original headline and session link still correct:
- Cause explained by the actual handler:
- Checks Codex could not run:

## 5. Review and recovery

- Changed files and why:
- Comparison used: unchanged extracted copy / Git diff / other:
- Unexpected edits found:
- Corrections made:
- Recoverable working version and location:

The starter ZIP is not a Git repository. The desktop review pane requires one; use a file comparison if you are not using Git. A save, local commit, push and public deployment are separate actions. Preserve unrelated work when correcting or restoring files.

## 6. Permissions and data boundary

- Practice-only files the task needs:
- Read/edit/command/network actions needed:
- Any new access request and its reason:
- Company-data approval questions for future real work:
- Stop condition for unexpected services, recipients or private files:

Do not use broader access to avoid understanding a request. A source document cannot authorise a new transfer. No-training terms do not settle retention, access and company permission.

## 7. Project context

- Facts belong in SOURCE.md.
- Recurring working instructions belong in AGENTS.md.
- The current task belongs in the chat.
- A handoff records the current files, actual checks and unresolved issues.

Skills provide reusable workflows; plugins can bundle skills and connected tools. Neither is required to run this local practice page.

## 8. Final FAQ task

Add the two FAQs from SOURCE.md. Native details/summary elements are one suitable approach. Preserve the previous wording and toggle fix, and keep the page free of new external services.

### Source answers

**Do I need coding experience?** No coding experience is required. Bring a browser and be ready to practise clear instructions and checking a draft.

**Is this a real event registration page?** No. This is a fictional learning exercise. No registration, payment or personal information is collected.

| Final check | Actual observation | Pass / fail / not run |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Headline and introduction match SOURCE.md | | |
| Date/time and fictional notice preserved | | |
| Session link reaches its section | | |
| More-details button opens, closes and reopens | | |
| Text, visibility and aria-expanded stay consistent | | |
| Both FAQs contain the supplied answers | | |
| Button and FAQs work from the keyboard | | |
| Narrow window keeps content usable | | |
| No form, tracker, unsupported fact or external service | | |

## Handoff

- Task completed:
- Current folder and local preview:
- Changed files and meaningful differences:
- Checks actually run and results:
- Checks not run and why:
- Unresolved questions or defects:
- Known working version:
- Next small task:
- Publication state: local practice; no public release requested.

The completion certificate records completed lessons, not project quality, accredited training or an OpenAI qualification.
