The short answer
Coursera is partly free. For most courses you can preview the first module for free, including its graded assessments, but the later modules are locked and you do not get a certificate. A small number of courses offer a Full Course, No Certificate option, which opens all the material for free without the certificate. To finish a whole AI course and earn a certificate without paying, the main official route is financial aid, which Coursera says most courses offer.
The old "audit" option that many articles still describe has gone. In August 2025, Coursera announced that its new preview model "replaces our audit experience". If a guide tells you to click "audit" on an AI course, it is out of date.

The ways to take a Coursera course
Coursera's enrolment options article sets out the routes. Here they are side by side.

One detail catches people out. Coursera's preview article says that if you take a course through a subscription that starts with a free trial, you will not receive a Course Certificate until the trial ends and your first monthly payment has been charged. So "finish it within the free trial" does not get you a free certificate.
How to take AI courses on Coursera without paying
1. Preview the first module. Coursera's help article says previewing is available for most courses, and that once you enrol you can preview for up to 6 months. On a standalone course, look for a "Preview this course" link under the Continue or Start Free Trial button. For courses inside a Specialization or Professional Certificate, the same article says you get all course materials except graded assessments, which stay locked. Coursera also notes that preview availability is subject to change.
2. Look for Full Course, No Certificate. On select courses this option appears when you enrol. It gives you the whole course, assessments included, but no certificate. If you only want the knowledge, this is the best free option when it exists.
3. Apply for financial aid. According to Coursera's financial aid article:
- You check for it on the course description page before enrolling, in the "More questions?" area beside the FAQs.
- The application asks about your education, career goals and finances, with a minimum of 150 words.
- Reviews take up to 16 days.
- Starting a free trial while your application is being reviewed cancels the application.
- If approved, you receive a discount off the cost of the course, which may depend on your application and your location, and you have 180 days to finish.
- For a Specialization, you apply separately for each course, one at a time.
4. Look for Coursera's free-access courses. Coursera's preview announcement mentions complimentary access to select courses on pressing societal issues such as mental health and public health. These are not AI courses, so they are unlikely to help here.
Apply for financial aid before you click "Start Free Trial", not after. Coursera says starting a trial while your application is under review cancels it.

A few notes from those pages. The Google AI Essentials page answers "Can I take the course for free?" with "No", and says that in the US and Canada Coursera charges $49 per month after a 7-day free trial, with prices that may vary in other countries. The Google AI Professional Certificate is also $49 a month in the US and Canada (may vary by country). Both, along with the two Vanderbilt courses, are marked as included with Coursera Plus. The DeepLearning.AI Agentic AI course is the one on this list that is clearly for builders: it is intermediate level and built around Python. What does Coursera Plus cost?
The Coursera Plus page showed $59 a month or $399 a year when we checked (prices may vary by country). The monthly plan has a 7-day free trial and the annual plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee. Coursera's help centre describes it as unlimited access to over 90% of the learning programmes in the catalogue; the Plus page says certain courses, Specializations and Professional Certificates are excluded, as are degrees. You earn a certificate for each course you complete. If you plan to take several AI courses in a short time, it can work out cheaper than paying for each separately.
When Coursera is the better choice
Coursera is the right answer more often than a free-only guide might admit.
- You want a recognised name. Certificates carry the logo of the partner, such as Google, Vanderbilt or DeepLearning.AI, and a verification link employers can check, according to Coursera's certificate article.
- You want structure and graded work. Weekly modules, quizzes and assessments suit people who need deadlines to finish.
- You want developer depth. Courses such as DeepLearning.AI's Agentic AI go into Python and building real workflows, which is beyond what a short free course for non-developers covers.
- You need possible academic credit. Coursera says some content may be eligible for academic credit at certain institutions, though a standard Course Certificate does not include academic credit by itself.
