The short answer
Yes, Google offers free AI courses, but not the ones most people mean. The genuinely free options are short courses on Google Skills, such as Introduction to Generative AI, which Google lists as "no charge" and which earns a badge, plus a free two hour course for teachers. The two best known programmes, Google AI Essentials and the Google AI Professional Certificate, are paid. They sit behind a subscription after a short free trial, and the Coursera page for AI Essentials says plainly that you cannot take it for free.
So if you searched for "Google AI courses free with certificate", the honest answer is: free with a badge, yes; free with a Google certificate, generally no, unless you are approved for financial aid on Coursera or you are a teacher taking the educators course.

Google's AI training is spread across several sites: Grow with Google (career and productivity courses, mostly hosted on Coursera), Google Skills (Google's own learning platform, with Cloud and AI content) and Google Cloud's certification pages. What is genuinely free
Google Skills short courses. Google's Learn AI skills page labels several courses "no charge", including Introduction to Generative AI, Introduction to Large Language Models, Introduction to AI Image Generation and AI Power-Ups for Google Workspace. They are short, video-led and finish with a badge rather than a certificate. The Introduction to Generative AI course page describes it as introductory level and about 45 minutes long.
Google Skills also has a free Starter plan, which its plans page says includes 35 free credits every month, access to limited hands-on labs and skill badges. A paid Pro plan unlocks the full catalogue; the page shows it at $29 a month with a 7-day trial (prices may vary by country).
Generative AI for Educators with Gemini. Google's educators page says the course is "provided at no cost". It is aimed at middle and high school teachers of any subject, needs no technical experience and takes two hours. Of everything in this guide, it is the clearest case of a free Google AI course with a certificate at the end.
Make AI Work for You. Google's Learn AI skills page lists this as expert-led training for small business owners at no charge.
If you only want to understand what generative AI is, the free 45 minute Google Skills course is a sensible first step. You do not need the paid programmes for that.
What costs money
Google AI Essentials. This is the course most people mean when they search "Google AI Essentials". Grow with Google describes it as taking under 5 hours and covering five modules, from an introduction to AI through to using AI responsibly. The Coursera page says that in the US and Canada, Coursera charges $49 per month after an initial 7-day free trial, and that prices may vary in other countries. The same page answers "Can I take the course for free?" with "No", and points people who cannot afford the fee to financial aid. It is also included with Coursera Plus.
One thing worth knowing: in December 2025, Google Cloud's blog listed Google AI Essentials among no-cost courses on Google Skills. We could not confirm that this still applies today, so treat it as something to check rather than a promise.
Google AI Professional Certificate. This is the newer, larger programme. Google's page says it is made up of eight courses that take about an hour each, needs no prior experience with AI, and is available on Coursera, Google Skills and Udemy. In the US and Canada the subscription cost is $49 per month, and the Coursera page notes that prices may vary in other countries. Enrolling currently includes three months of Google AI Pro at no cost, an offer Google says must be redeemed by 1 January 2027. The Coursera page says financial aid is available, but recipients do not get the Google AI Pro trial.
Generative AI Leader certification. Google Cloud's certification page describes this as an exam for any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience. The preparation path is free, but the exam itself has a $99 registration fee (plus tax where applicable, and it may vary by country). It is 90 minutes long and the certification is valid for three years.

- Badge:
- A digital marker that you completed a short course or set of labs. Useful as a record, but lighter than a certificate.
- Free trial:
- A short window of full access before a subscription starts charging. Cancel before it ends if you do not want to pay.
- Financial aid:
- A Coursera application for people who cannot afford a course. If approved, you get access to the course and its certificate for free or at a reduced cost.
- Certification:
- A credential you earn by passing a proctored exam, rather than by completing lessons.
When Google's paid option is the better choice
It would be dishonest to pretend the paid courses are not worth it for anyone. They are the better choice when:
- You want a recognised brand name on your CV. A certificate from Google carries a name employers know. If that matters for your application, a free completion certificate from a small site will not do the same job.
- You want structure and assessment. The Professional Certificate has eight courses, graded work and a portfolio of activities. That is more structure than a short free course offers.
- You work in Google's ecosystem. If your employer runs on Google Workspace or Google Cloud, training built around Gemini and Google's tools maps directly onto your day job.
- You need a proctored credential. The Generative AI Leader exam is a formal certification with a proctored exam. Completion certificates, ours included, are not the same thing.
- You want developer depth. Google Skills has technical paths, such as Introduction to Agents and Google's Agent Ecosystem, which ends with building a Gemini Enterprise application for a skill badge. That is territory for people who want to build, not just use.
