The short answer
Yes, NVIDIA, IBM and AWS all offer free AI courses, and some of them suit complete beginners. NVIDIA's Deep Learning Institute has a set of free self-paced courses, including a two hour, no-coding course called Generative AI Explained. IBM SkillsBuild describes itself as 100% free and offers digital credentials you can share with employers. AWS Skill Builder has hundreds of free digital courses, including short, beginner-level generative AI courses aimed at business leaders.
The catch is not price, it is direction. All three are technology companies, and much of their catalogue exists to train people who will build on their platforms: GPUs for NVIDIA, cloud services for AWS, IBM's own tools and models for IBM. The beginner courses are real and worth taking, but they sit at the edge of catalogues that get technical quickly. The formal certifications, where they exist, are paid exams.

NVIDIA AI courses: what is actually free?
NVIDIA runs its training through the Deep Learning Institute, which offers self-paced courses, instructor-led workshops and certification exams. On its self-paced courses page, NVIDIA says many of its popular self-paced courses are free, can be completed in a day or less, and are designed for beginners.
The free list on NVIDIA's online training page is revealing. It includes Generative AI Explained (2 hours), Augmenting LLMs using Retrieval Augmented Generation (1 hour) and Building RAG Agents for LLMs (8 hours), alongside titles such as An Even Easier Introduction to CUDA, Getting Started with AI on Jetson Nano and several Omniverse and DOCA courses. Most are aimed at people who program GPUs, robots and data centres.
Generative AI Explained is the exception. NVIDIA's AI Learning Essentials page calls it a no-coding course on generative AI concepts and applications, lasting two hours at no cost. If you want to understand the technology in NVIDIA's words and nothing more, it is a sensible afternoon.
On certificates. NVIDIA says learners can earn a DLI certificate in select courses. It does not say which free courses carry one, so check the individual listing. The formal NVIDIA certifications are separate: remotely proctored exams at $125 for Associate level and $200 to $500 for Professional level, covering areas including AI infrastructure, data science and generative AI. Those are technical credentials, not beginner certificates.
IBM SkillsBuild: the most beginner-friendly of the three
IBM's free learning lives on IBM SkillsBuild, which says it offers "100% free learning". The adult learners page answers the obvious question directly: yes, it is a free education programme, and no, you do not need a technical background to start. The way in is a free sign-up on the site.
Of the three providers, SkillsBuild is the most deliberately aimed at people starting out or changing careers rather than engineers already on the platform. The learning catalogue currently lists AI items such as:
- Getting Started with Generative AI, marked as earning a digital credential, covering foundations of generative AI, ethical considerations and an introduction to large language models, with 3 to 10 hours of foundational learning.
- AI Literacy, about 4 hours, on how AI systems learn and how humans and AI work together.
- Build Your First Chatbot, 1 to 3 hours, foundational.
- Ethical Considerations for Generative AI, 1 to 3 hours, foundational.
On credentials. IBM says its digital credentials are online credentials with verified details about your skills, and that earning one can involve completing an online course and then an assessment, reviewed hands-on project or even an interview. Once earned, you can share it on a CV or LinkedIn. IBM describes them as recognised by employers. They are not the same as an accredited qualification, and IBM does not claim they are, but they are free and they carry a well-known name.
The trade-off is that some content is shaped around IBM's own tools. The generative AI course, for example, focuses on guiding IBM Granite models. The concepts transfer; the product screens may not.
AWS AI courses: free, fast and business-friendly at the entry level
Amazon's training is on AWS Skill Builder, where AWS says you can access hundreds of free self-paced digital courses. A paid subscription, listed at $29 a month or $449 a year for individuals, adds exam preparation, immersive labs and digital classrooms. You do not need the subscription to start.
The free entry-level AI courses are short and genuinely aimed at non-developers:
- Generative AI for Executives runs for 50 minutes across 18 videos. Its intended audience includes non-technical business leaders, and the recommended previous knowledge is "None". Access is listed as free.
- Introduction to Generative AI - Art of the Possible is a one hour, fundamental-level course on use cases, risks and benefits. Access is listed as free. The listing also notes that the course moves to an updated format on 30 September, so progress may reset if you are partway through.
- AWS Cloud Quest: Generative AI Practitioner is described by AWS as a completely free, game-based course. Finishing all assignments earns an official AWS Cloud Quest badge.
Beyond those, the AWS AI training page lists role-based paths such as the Generative AI Learning Plan for Developers and Building Generative AI Applications Using Amazon Bedrock. Those are for developers and solutions architects, and they assume you will build on AWS.
On certification. The AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam costs 100 USD, runs 90 minutes and has 65 questions. It validates foundational AI, machine learning and generative AI knowledge on AWS. AWS points to free preparation material on Skill Builder, but the exam itself is paid.
Which one should you pick?

Pick NVIDIA if you want a short, no-coding explanation of generative AI from a company at the centre of the hardware side, or if you are heading towards technical work with GPUs, CUDA or AI infrastructure.
Pick IBM SkillsBuild if you are starting out or changing career and want a free, shareable credential with a known name on it. For most non-developers who specifically want a free certificate from a big technology brand, this is the strongest of the three.
Pick AWS if you want the fastest possible business-level overview (under an hour), if your employer runs on AWS, or if you are working towards the AI Practitioner exam.
Pick none of them if what you actually want is to use AI tools in your own job this week. These courses explain the technology well but spend little time on prompting, checking answers or automating real tasks.
