You have probably heard the word AI a great deal lately. On the news, from family, perhaps from someone at work. It can feel as if everyone else was handed an instruction booklet that you missed.
Nobody was. This technology is new to almost everyone, including many of the people who talk about it most confidently. You have not fallen behind. You are simply arriving now, which is a perfectly good time to arrive.
This course goes gently. Each lesson is short. You can stop whenever you like and pick up where you left off.
What an AI assistant is
When people say AI today, they usually mean an AI assistant. It is a program you type questions into, and it types answers back. Some can listen and speak as well.
Here is the simplest honest description:
- The program has read an enormous amount of writing. Books, websites, articles, manuals, letters.
- From all that reading, it has learned how words and ideas tend to fit together.
- When you ask it something, it uses that learning to predict a helpful reply, one word after another.
That is really it. There is no little person inside. It is a very well-read pattern spotter.
In plain English
- AI:
- Short for artificial intelligence. Here it simply means a computer program that can understand and write everyday language.
- AI assistant:
- An AI program you have a conversation with by typing or speaking. Well-known ones include ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
- Prompt:
- Whatever you type in to ask it something. A question, a request, a few words. That is all.
Three things it is not
It is not a person. It can sound warm and friendly, and that is pleasant. But it does not know you, it has no feelings about you, and it is not your friend in the way a person is. It is a tool that writes well.
It is not always right. Because it predicts likely words rather than looking facts up in a trusted book, it sometimes gets things wrong. Occasionally it states something untrue in a very confident voice. This is normal for every assistant, not a sign you did something wrong.
It is not magic. It cannot see into your home, read your mind or know what happened this morning unless you tell it. It only knows what it learned from its reading and what you type.
A good way to think of it: a knowledgeable acquaintance who has read a great deal, is always happy to help, and is sometimes wrong. You would listen to them, and you would still check anything important.
You cannot break it
This is worth saying clearly, because it is the worry that stops most people.
You cannot break an AI assistant by asking a question. There is no wrong question and no wrong way to type. Spelling mistakes are fine. Half a sentence is fine. If it does not understand, it will say so or make a sensible guess, and you can simply try again.
It will not be impatient with you. It will not think a question is silly. It answers the hundredth question in the same even tone as the first. And asking it something does not buy anything, send anything or change anything on your computer or phone.
If you ever feel lost in the middle of a conversation, you can start a fresh one and ask again. Nothing is lost by starting over.
