Finding the words
Most of us have sat looking at a birthday card, a condolence message or a speech, knowing what we feel but not quite how to say it. This is one of the places an AI assistant can be a real help.
It will not replace your voice. What it can do is give you a first draft to react to, which is often much easier than starting from a blank page.
Help with a message or a card
Tell it who the message is for, what the occasion is and a little about the person. The more real detail you give, the more it will sound like you.
Help me write a short, warm message for my grandson Sam's 18th birthday card. He is starting an apprenticeship as an electrician and loves football. I want it to be proud but not soppy. Under 60 words.
Then make it yours. You can ask it to change things:
- "Make it a little funnier."
- "Take out the second sentence."
- "That sounds too formal. Make it sound more like me talking."
And of course, change any words yourself. It is your message. The assistant just helped you get going.
A lovely trick: write your own rough version first, however clumsy, and ask it to tidy it up while keeping your words where it can. The result sounds far more like you.
A speech for a special occasion
A toast at a wedding, a few words at a retirement party, a eulogy for a friend. These matter, and they can feel daunting.
The assistant can help you plan the shape of the speech, suggest how to open and close, and turn your memories into sentences. Give it the stories and the details only you know. It will help with the structure; the heart of it comes from you.
I am giving a three-minute speech at my oldest friend's 70th birthday. Here are three memories I would like to include: [write your memories here]. Help me put them into a warm speech with a gentle opening and a toast at the end.
Read the draft aloud before the day. If a sentence does not sound like you, change it.
Understanding the technology the grandchildren use
Children and grandchildren often use apps and words that can be puzzling. Rather than feel left out, you can ask the assistant quietly and privately.
My granddaughter keeps talking about her streaks on an app. What does that mean?
What is a group chat, and how is it different from a text message?
My son says he will share the photos to the cloud. What does that mean, in plain words?
It might also spark a nice conversation. Many young people enjoy being asked to show how something works.

If you enjoy taking photographs, or have boxes of old ones, it can offer ideas. How to take a better photo of the garden in winter light. How to arrange a family photo so everyone fits in. Captions for an album for a golden wedding. Questions to ask older relatives about the people in old pictures, before those stories are lost.
Keeping personal details out
A helpful habit to build early. What you type into an AI assistant is sent to the company that runs it and may be stored. So treat it like a helpful stranger rather than a trusted diary.
It does not need:
- Full names together with addresses or dates of birth
- Bank details, card numbers or passwords
- Private health details about other people
- Anything a family member told you in confidence
You can still get excellent help without them. "My grandson" works just as well as his full name and address. Where a real detail matters, like a first name in a card, that is fine; just keep the sensitive things out.
A simple test before you send anything: would I be comfortable if a stranger read this? If not, take that part out or describe it more generally.
